Last month, two of our Elgin veterinarians at Dundee Animal Hospital were recognized at the City of Elgin’s annual Police Awards. This is an event where citizens, civilians, and officers received recognition for their exceptional contributions to the Elgin Police Department in 2018. On Thursday, February 7th, 2019, Dr. Kelly Lathrop and Dr. Jeremy Larson received the Distinguished Community Service award for their volunteer efforts, donated time, compassion, and care for the Elgin Police Department’s K-9 partners over the last year.
The Elgin Police Department has had about 20 police dogs since 1991. Our Elgin animal hospital has “officially” provided veterinary care for the Elgin K-9 unit since the early 2000s and “unofficially” since the early-to-mid 90s. We currently see four of Elgin’s K-9 police dogs and the doctors and staff always look forward to their visits. “We feel it’s a privilege to care for this incredible group of dogs,” said Dr. Lathrop. “There are many veterinarians to choose from and we are honored that EPD has placed their trust in Dundee Animal Hospital of Elgin.” Their current group of police dogs includes chocolate lab Willson and German shepherds Bauer, Colt, and Tango. Veterinary visits have included everything from wellness visits, vaccinations, surgeries to guiding them peacefully over the Rainbow Bridge.
Dr. Lathrop and Dr. Larson are honored to have received this distinguished award from the Elgin Police Department. “It is truly an honor to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Larson. “To be entrusted with not only the K-9 unit but also many officer’s own personal pets speak volumes to us personally. We hope to serve the Elgin K-9 police force and community for many years to come.”
