Recovery and Pain Management
Following surgery, your pet is moved from the surgical ward to a recovery area where our staff continues to monitor their vital signs. Intravenous fluids are continued during the recovery phase and your pet may at this point receive additional pain medications. Once awake, our patient's temperature, pulse and respiration rates are again measured to insure recovery is proceeding as anticipated. Your surgeon or a surgical technician will contact you at this time with a surgical progress report and update you on how your pet is feeling following anesthesia.
Most patients are released to go home on the same or next day following the surgery. Certain procedures require longer hospitalization periods. The doctor will evaluate your pet's progress and determine when it is safe to release our patient for home recuperation. When we release our patients to recuperate at home, pain medication is provided to help ease discomfort. Pain medications may be oral tablets or liquid. In some instances, a pain patch is applied to your pet's skin.
At the time your pet is released, you will receive instructions for home care, details on any medications you take home and what to watch for in your pet's continuing recovery. We are here and available for you and your pet 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, should you have any questions or concerns.
