What to Expect When
Your Pet Needs Surgery:
General &
Elective Procedures:

Pre-Surgical Testing and General Anesthesia

Most surgical procedures require the administration of general anesthesia. At Dundee Animal Hospital, all anesthetic protocols are tailored to your individual pet based on physical exam findings, medical history, age of your pet and laboratory data.

A physical exam and pre-operative blood work are important steps in preparing for surgery. During the pre-surgical exam, your pet's medical history is reviewed, general health is assessed and blood is drawn for laboratory analysis. Blood analysis is as important for our pets as it is for people undergoing a surgical procedure. Your pet's liver and kidney functions are analyzed and testing for anemia and other blood abnormalities is performed. Each of these steps helps our doctors determine if your pet is at the optimum health level for surgery or if special care is needed during any phase of the surgery.
