Dental Procedures

Regular dental cleanings are an important part of maintaining your pet's good health. Dental procedures require general anesthesia. This provides our doctors a unique opportunity to perform a thorough oral examination, difficult to do if your pet is awake. Potential problems such as oral masses, tooth fractures, etc., can be identified in early stages when they are more readily treatable. During the prophylactic dental cleaning ("prophy"), the teeth are scaled to remove tartar, polished to remove plaque and treated with fluoride to help in the resistance of oral disease. More advanced dental disease may require tooth extractions or restoration. Most often, pets are released from the hospital the same day as the procedure.
